Rescue & Rehabilitation

Specialized care for injured and orphaned raptors

The California Raptor Center (CRC) is dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned raptors. Together, the CRC and the UCD Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) receive approximately 100-200 injured or ill raptors each year, many brought in by concerned members of the community who take action when they encounter a bird in need. Many of these raptors are admitted due to injuries or illnesses related to human activity. Through specialized care and rehabilitation, about 60% of these birds are ultimately released back into the wild.

Following any necessary veterinary treatment, raptors continue their recovery and rehabilitation at CRC. Depending on the bird and its condition, this process can take several weeks to several months. During that time, birds receive ongoing care and progressively rebuild their strength and flight capabilities in specialized enclosures, with the goal of preparing them for release back into the wild.

Volunteers are an essential part of this work, contributing approximately 7,000 hours each year to help care for the birds, maintain the center and its grounds, and educate the public.
